Big Blue Functionality

Way to get things hopping again, Mike! Nothing like a post about “Hooters” to draw attention …

Teaching aesthetic functionality is one of my favorite bits of the IP Survey class. The concept fairly demands use of one of the most vivid and memorable examples in the whole class … the question of color for automatic toilet bowl cleaners.

cleanerThe near-universal color is blue, of course. After all, think of how bad the alternatives would go awry. Yellow? Not so good. Red? That’s halloween decoration territory. Green? A little too pond-like. Clear? How does one know it’s working at all? The Blue end of the spectrum is definitely the place to be. In order to facilitate competitive provision of automatic toilet bowl cleaners, we don’t let any provider protect the color of the cleaner (whether as a registered color mark or as a trade dress).
