I think he was referring to a "modernist" level of consumption as being OK (as opposed to some Spartan lifestyle); but beyond what you need to live, to educate yourself & your children, to have a decent place to dwell, the consumption is evil, because it deprives others of resources they need to do the same. This definition may be "simplistic" but often the deepest truths are contained in everyday parables.
