Frank, I'm a former college admission admission officer who shares your concerns on this matter.

I've set up an open directory of admissions consulting services like IvyWise, Essay Edge and others where families can anonymously review their experience working with them.

IvyWise has an entry on the index

Anyone you can send over to weigh in on their experience would be doing a service to the whole educational community.

Someone needs to hold these consultants accountable.

Thanks for that point, C.E. I'd love to learn more about how the book publishing industry works...for example, if agents can be bought by authors to get access to publishing houses. I'm afraid I know very little about the potential for commodification of publishing opportunities. And perhaps sympathetic observers will point out all manner of ways in which what may appear to be unfair advantage was only earned via merit.

Irony alert:

Katherine Cohen is the "admissions counsellor" who referred Kaayva Viswanathan to the William Morris Agency, which in turn brought in Alloy Entertainment, a book packager. This should start ringing bells: Ms Viswanathan is the Harvard student whose novel was pulled from the shelves earlier this spring for plagiarizing several other books.

Overall, this isn't a high recommendation for the process. Or other types of equity...
