The current issue of Wired magazine contains a great narrative about the perils of self-help at the ISP level: Attack of the Bots. The whole story is captured in this quotation:
“We used to call the Internet a sort of Wild West,” Laslop muses. “Now it’s more like Chicago in the 1920s with Al Capone.”
(Laslop is Keith Laslop, president of Prolexic, which offers online security services.)
That metaphor will take a while to unpack, and I’m too swamped right now to dive in. But I’m glad to read that we don’t have to suffer the continuing curse of the “wild West” metaphor.
I loved the bots article–fascinating “spy vs. spy” stuff, esp. the antagonists IMing each other during one battle.
