Housing Crisis in ‘Toon Town

Posted by Jacqui Lipton · September 13th, 2009 · 3 Comments

As a parent of youngsters, I spend a lot of my time being brainwashed by exposed to cartoons on Nick, Noggin etc.  It dawns on me that no one has yet noticed the apparent severity of the housing crisis in the world of cartoons.  For example, Wubbzy lives in a tree and SpongeBob lives in a pineapple under the sea.  His friend Patrick seems to live under a large rock.  And I’m not sure that Dora or Diego appear to have homes to go to – Diego often appears in a cave with bats.  Should we all spare a thought to the way the economy has affected these poor cartoon creatures?

It’s been a problem for a while. Scooby, Shaggy, and friends lived in a van.

That was the Mystery Machine, of course, and I’ve long wondered about the resemblance between that vehicle and the van that later disgorged Sean Penn, Anthony Edwards, and Eric Stoltz in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Spongebob’s pineapple is actually pretty nice inside.
