Hehe… yeah, the “not a lot of personal cuts…” line was cute. And, at the time, it was accurate.
The truth is that when the barriers to entrance were lowered, and much different types of people were able to participate… the experience changed. Not necessarily for better or worse, of course, but they changed nonetheless.
