Apparently in Thailand one way to reduce a seven-year sentence for selling amphetamines to a four-year sentence is to win a boxing title. Siriporn Thaweesuk, the woman who was serving the seven year sentence, won the world light-flyweight boxing title, became Thailand’s first female boxing world champion, and as a reward was released on parole. According to AP the title was fought in the prison courtyard complete with cheering inmates and guards. Now she will live in a house near the prison and continue to train at the prison. The article also reports that this was her first win since losing a straw-weight bout a year ago. She defends her title in July. All of which makes me wonder whether the people in charge of the prison system are reading Stephen King’s Running Man? And, in that spirit if she loses will she go back to prison?
