Creative Commons Skepticism

Call me a skeptic on the merits of the new Yahoo! Creative Commons search engine . Is it a good thing that you can search for CC- licensed content? Absolutely. Is it a good thing that the search is limited to Creative Commons-licensed content? I’m not so sure. The point might be to encourage content developers to use CC licenses, but that doesn’t make me any happier. I’m not thrilled by an information world that is comprehensively tagged with labels that tell me what I may and may not do. Why put up this wall between free and unfree? My mind wanders, to this: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” (Probably the first time in my life I’ve invoked a Reaganism for anything.) Why not design the engine so that it identifies search results by licensing status?
