Radiohead Piracy?

Radiohead is offering its new album online for whatever price people wish to pay — even zero.  Here’s the official site.

More than a million copies have been “purchased” through the site.

More than a half-million copies have been “pirated” by being distributed through unauthorized sites and resources.  Even though the album is available for free from Radiohead’s site, lots of people are arguably “stealing” copies elsewhere.  I put “stealing” in quotation marks because I’m having a hard time characterizing the “pirate” (oops – quotation marks again) behavior.

At Forbes.com, Andy Greenberg ponders what’s going on, with comments from UCLA’s Doug Lichtman.

Update (10/27):  Mike Carroll has sensible observations on Radiohead’s initiative at Carrollogos.
