White Albums as Compilation Work

white albumsWe Buy White Albums, Rutherford Chang’s project now at Recess in New York (NYT coverage here), reminds me that an artist and an audience may find creative expression -and beautiful expression at that – in a compilation “work of authorship” that is little more than an exhaustive collection of tokens of a single type.

But is mounting a huge collection of White Album covers on a gallery wall a “copyrightable work”?  Should it be?
