We Buy White Albums, Rutherford Chang’s project now at Recess in New York (NYT coverage here), reminds me that an artist and an audience may find creative expression -and beautiful expression at that – in a compilation “work of authorship” that is little more than an exhaustive collection of tokens of a single type.
But is mounting a huge collection of White Album covers on a gallery wall a “copyrightable work”? Should it be?
